We are in the midst of an election year and every four years the one thing that amazes me about the presidential election is the intensity of the campaign. The campaign and the spreading of that candidate’s ideas and influence is the soul goal of everything they do. Everywhere they go, everyone they see, they share their vision, they tell their story, and they make their dream known.
I wonder what might happen if we as artists, and as Christians, went on a campaign to spread and gain support for the ideas, dreams, and inspiration God has planted in our hearts. I’m not talking about sidewalk preaching or street evangelism. I’m talking about the project of vision that has been stirring in your soul that you’ve been trying to keep private for who knows how long.
I know we’re not going to rent an RV and go roaming the countryside promoting our blogs, but everywhere we go there are people, people in need of something to believe in. This is something politicians know, that people are hungry for something, or someone, to believe in, so they appear in front of everyone they can and they say, “I’m your guy”.
Politics however, simply cannot solve all of our problems. Politics and make plans, and start organizations, and create laws, and bills, and acts that will help to better the physical condition of our world, and that is great. But there are matters of the heart and soul that politics just cannot touch the way art and spirituality can.
Art is a powerful thing, and if it is done well, it provides an emotional change or spiritual awakening for the viewer. The Gospel is the same way, to know Jesus Christ creates a change in our heart, and that change of heart can, and will, be a catalyst for world shaping visions that will help to better the physical conditions of our world. Simply said, God gets down to the heart of the matter, and tells us what to say with our lives, so that we can change the world.
The problem with artists, however, is that too may of us keep our talents, our light, under a bushel. Because art is so personal, we are afraid to “put ourselves out there”, but what we are really saying is we are afraid to promote the message that has been spoken into our heart about what the world must hear, and what the world must know. That is the weight that our creativity carries. Politicians try and change minds, while we change hearts. The heart is the heart of the matter. It is the core where everything lives and breaths and to promote your creativity is to bare your soul to a world that can be dark and hurtful. But if we suffer long, and continue to create, every time we do bear our hearts, we invite a little light, and a little healing into this world.
And trust me, you never know, you never know who is going to be listening.
