This is something I've written about before. And it sounds great in theory, but at some point, at some level, the environment we inhabit will have some effect on us physically, mentally, emotionally, and therefore, creatively.
So what are we to do then? For those of us who spend our days with pessimistic co-workers and our nights with broken, argumentative families, how do we avoid the dragging effect that such habitats can have on our spirit?
It's important to remember that our realm of influence is not limited simply to those who physically surround us. A contributing factor that is just as strong, if not stronger, are the voices we fill our mind and heart with. These voices can come from those who are physically with us, but they can also come from people we read, watch, and listen to.
In 2014 (almost 2015) it has never been easier to surround yourself with the most intelligent, inspiring, encouraging, comforting, or kind voices the world has to offer. It's never been easier to create your own soundtrack for your life, and you get to choose what plays on repeat.
We can't always control the reality of our physical environment, but we can be better equipped to be a light in that environment if we make the commitment to better ourselves everyday by filling our mind with the infinite positive, uplifting messages that are available at the tap of a touch screen.
What voices fill you up? Who are the people that challenge you to be better? If you can't physically be around them, then download them, buy them, stream them. Do whatever it takes to keep yourself inspired by them so that you are freed to inspire others.
Jim Rohn would say it this way, “Every day, stand guard at the door of your mind, and you alone decide what thoughts and beliefs you let into your life. For they will shape whether you feel rich or poor, cursed or blessed.”
