Some would say that in order to truly create something of value, you must first learn the proper technique. Still, others would say experience is our toughest and greatest teacher. You can’t learn everything from a book, you must learn by doing.
So which comes first?
Trick question! It doesn’t matter!
Create first, then learn.
Learn first, then create.
I don’t care.
What’s important, is that we constantly in the practice of both, for these two actions feed on each other. Creativity is the engine for learning and visa versa. We create, then reflect on what we’ve done, learn from it, and create something better, which teaches us even more. It’s a self-sustaining growth model that any artist can implement.
Unlike doctors or airline pilots, I would encourage artists to be both practitioners and students at the same time.
The more you create, the more you learn.
The more you learn, the more you create.
