Don’t take my word for it. Listen to some of the greats...
“Let’s face it, writing is hell.” -William Styron
“Coal mining is hard work. Writing is a nightmare.” -Philip Roth
“Writing is hard work and bad for the health.” -E.B. White
Of course, feel free to replace writing with singing, photography, business, or whatever creative endeavor you consider your art.
Art is a wrestling match. It’s you against the page. You against the canvas. You against the piano. It’s you against the resistance, the fear, the distractions and excuses.
When Jacob found himself wrestling with the angel, not only did he fight, scratch, and claw all night long, but even when morning came and the angel asked for a ceasefire, Jacob refused. “I will not let go unless you bless me,” he said. These are not only the words of the father of Israel. These are also the words of the artist. She will not let go until the words come out just right, until the melody becomes a symphony, until the company culture is rich and flourishing.
So fight dirty, fight clean, throw an elbow, scratch, claw, even bite if you have to. Whatever you do though, don’t let go.
Keep wrestling.
