Originators (Something out of nothing)
The word “creativity” stems from the word “create” which literally means, “to bring into existence.” To create is to essentially bring something out of nothing. This is exactly what God does at the beginning of time in Genesis 1. “The earth was formless and empty… and God said ‘Let there be…’” and all of a sudden there was light, sky, moon, stars, animals, fish, and us. And it was so. At one moment, there was nothing. Then God engaged in the act of creating, and all of a sudden there was something.
In a similar way, a singer/songwriter starts with nothing, a blank slate. No words. No music. Sometimes not even an idea. Using her talents as both a writer and a musician, she brings a melody, lyrics, and a chorus, all out of nothing. Where there was one just blank paper, there is now a song. Something out of nothing.
These type of “start from scratch” idea people are what I like to call originators. They create highly original content that is all their own. This is what most of us picture when we think about the gift of creativity, or being an artist. These are authors who write original stories, inventors who discover new forms of communication, technicians who create new ways of looking at the world. While originators may be the most obvious group of artists, this doesn’t mean that they are the only group of artists.
For the rest of this week, we will continue to search through Genesis 1 and discover two other types of creativity that God employed in His original creative act. We will look at modern day examples of each of these creative forms and hopefully you will identify one, learn from all, and your understanding and appreciation for the act of creation will be broader and deeper by the end.
