When we start something, whether its school, or a sports season as a child, or a class at church or for your masters degree, or maybe you have a personal trainer, or it’s your first day alone on the job after being apprenticed for months. When we start something, I notice we often expect some, what I like to call, warm up time. We show up on the first day not expecting much, maybe a slight walk through. But we certainly aren’t prepared for a normal day, much less a busy day.

Upon returning to school this semester, day one hit me like a freight train. I was expecting an easy day, full of reading syllabi, and catching up on our vacation. This, however, was not the case at all. 

Luckily, the Lord revealed the lesson to me very early on in the day. His message was simple, sometimes when things start, they start. Sometimes on day one, people are going to expect us to start off running and not look back. And sometimes they won’t, but regardless of whether day one is going to shoot us off the runners blocks or not, we show up prepared to do so. 

This week, I learned the valuable lesson of being ready at the start of the race, on day one, whether I think there will be a warm up or not. And if I show up ready and day one is a warm up, then I have learned the wonderful skill of over preparation.
