Of all the wise mantras employed by Jesus, this one is probably my favorite, because it can be applied to so many different areas of life.
Jesus knew that his message would not resonate with everyone. Did he let that stop him? Of course not! Everywhere he went, he simple said what he came to say, and left the rest up to God.
“Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”
Or, in other words…
“Here, I made this. If it’s for you, pass it on. If it’s not, maybe next time.”
What if this was our mantra every time we shared our art with the market?
What if we stopped compromising our art in an effort to please everybody?
What if we stopped putting all the pressure on ourselves?
What if we let go of “popularity” as a goal?
What if, instead, we simply created what God had placed on our hearts, shared it boldly, and left the rest up to Him?
When art pleases everyone, it ceases to be art. Good art does not make everyone nod in agreement. Good art, much like a good sermon, evokes intense reactions and sparks great discussion.
If you’re an artist, and I believe you are, you’re not here to please everyone, you’re here to provide a spark for change. And when it comes to game changers, I’m not sure I can think of a better example than Jesus himself. So perhaps it’s time we all adopted his mantra.
“Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”
