I love podcasts. Many people fill up their phones with too many song or photos. My poor iPhone is always running low on storage because of the unruly amount of downloads I have in my Podcasts app. It's one of my more nerdy traits for sure, but I carry no shame over it.
What is a bit shameful are the amount of impulse purchases I've made after listening to interviews on these podcasts. I've bought books, seen films, paid for apps, and donated large amounts of money(sometimes money that I don't really have) simply because I listened to an author, director, or business owner tell their story through my headphones. I can't help it. When someone opens up and tells their story, I fall in love with the person. I’m an instant fan, and I want to do whatever I can to help and support them on their journey.
There is simply nothing that is more attractive to the human spirit than a good story. That's why we love television, movies, books, and podcasts. Okay, maybe it's just me with the podcasts, but you get the point.
Stories increase our sense of connection, not only to the storyteller, but to the people within the story, and the truth their story stands for. This is why I believe that the Bible and art are two of the most powerful weapons for change in the world today. The Bible is full of stories, and when we listen to, or read them, we fall deeper in love both with the Storyteller, and the truth He is teaching us within the story.
Increasing your love for others, and God, is as simple as taking the time to listen to their story.
And in the same way, garnering love and attention for your project, mission, or company is as simple as finding your story, and telling it to whoever will listen.
Everyone has statistics. Everyone has a lower price, a faster speed, a newer version. Everyone can also have a story, but no one can have your story. Your story is what sets you apart and draws others in.
So listen to as many stories as you can. Stay inspired. Then go out, and tell your own so you can return the favor.
