In 2006, Salman Khan started the Khan Academy. This website is an online educational tool that provides a “free, world-class education to anyone, anywhere.” With nothing more than an internet connection, anyone can log on to khanacamdemy.org and take courses in math (basic to multivariable calculus), physics, entreprenuership, computer programming, music, organic chemistry, and more.
In 2010, Chase Jarvis and Craig Swanson started CreativeLive. This website provides a free creative education to anyone, anywhere using classes taught by some of the best artists in the world. With a few simple clicks, anyone can learn Photoshop, InDesign, video editing, instruments, freelancing, entrepreneurship, writing, and more.
In 2012, Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller started Coursera. The company partners with top universities, encouraging them to provide some of their courses for free online. By visiting Coursera’s site, anyone, regardless of high school GPA, can take courses from higher learning institutions such as Duke, Northwestern, Stanford, Princeton, Brown and the University of London.
Are all these websites a secret? Of course not. But I’m willing to bet that the majority of us have used the, “I don’t have enough knowledge/skills” excuse at one time or another. In light of the three examples given above, does this excuse have any validity whatsoever? I think not.
We have everything we need to do whatever we want.
The tools are out there.
But the people willing to put in the work needed to learn how to use them are few.
