I love that old quote by Marianne Williamson, "Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, our greatest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us."
Is it possible that, as much as we talk about wanting to find our calling, we're actually terrified of realizing it? Because, once we've seized our calling, then we actually have to live up to it? In reality, isn't it easier to wallow in indecision than it is to respond to your calling and get to work?
Once we commit to writing the book, or starting the business, or marrying the girl, then we actually have to begin the task of making it happen. The moment we make the decision to start is the same moment that failure becomes no longer a distant nightmare, but an actual possibility. And because we have such a strong aversion to failure, most of us would actually rather remain completely ignorant of our calling.
Admittedly, I myself have struggled with these thoughts from time to time. I fear that, even at my young age of 23, I have already set my sights so high, that I will never actually fulfill all the callings and purposes I've committed to pursuing.
Here's a comforting thought though, and I believe it to be true. Whatever your calling is, no matter how big or small, God would not have given it to you if He wasn't going to help you accomplish it. With the Creator of the universe on our side, we have nothing to fear. Not our darkness. And certainly not our light.
